In this teeny space, we wanted to
create a tidy, low-maintenance landscape with clean,
modern lines to complement the style of the house &
the preferred aesthetic of the clients. The centerpiece
is a split level patio which appealed to our clients’
as the most practical way to get outside and use as an
extension of their indoor living space.
Each transition of materials (grass to gravel, patio to
pavers to gravel garden and path) is paired with a
slight change in height, and naturally leads you
through the garden while creating a sense of separate
spaces and a level of visual complexity.
All plantings are contained in either steel-edged and
slightly upraised peripheral planter space, gravel
space, or custom steel and concrete planters. The large
massings of grasses & bamboo soften the edges,
create variations in height, as well as provide
movement and quick screening. Other plantings include
planted concrete succulent bowls, an herb garden in an
upraised steel container, seasonal interest of
perennial surprises and anchors of an Olive tree and a
Chinese Pistache for fall color.
